11+ Buckinghamshire
11+ Buckinghamshire - Secondary Transfer Test (STT)
Buckinghamshire is one of the last remaining counties where secondary education is fully selective. There are 13 grammar schools and 31 upper schools in the county. Buckinghamshire has an 'opt-out' system for the 11 plus: children in Buckinghamshire primary schools are automatically entered for the 11+ unless their parents ACTIVELY WITHDRAW them from taking it. Parents / carers must notify their child's headteacher that they do not wish their child to take the test. However, children in private primary schools and those who attend schools OUTSIDE of Buckinghamshire will need to opt in to take the test by registering on the Buckinghamshire Council website.
In Bucks the 11+ test is referred to as the Secondary Transfer Test (STT). The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) is a company set up to manage and administer the Buckinghamshire STT for the thirteen grammar schools in the county. The schools operate a coordinated selection system with children sitting a common test shared by all thirteen schools.
The Secondary Transfer Test (STT) comprises two test papers. One paper includes comprehension, technical English (i.e. grammar, punctuation and spelling) and Verbal Reasoning questions. The other paper includes Non-Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Maths questions. Both papers are taken on the same day with a short break between. Each Secondary Transfer Test paper takes about 45 minutes. This means that it can be administered in approximately an hour including the introduction and practice examples. Scores are age standardisation to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged.
In order to be able to prepare children for the STT, parents of children in Year 5 are provided with a familiarisation booklet in the summer term so that they can familiarise children with how the test papers will look. In the same week as the STT children will take a practice test which contains two test papers each lasting about 25-30 minutes containing questions that are similar to those they will encounter in the Secondary Transfer Test. This gives children experience of working under test conditions as well as giving them the opportunity to work through example test material. The STT includes instructions given aurally and the practice test also familiarises children with listening to instructions from an audio file. The practice test papers are not marked or taken home from the school.
A child must achieve a Secondary Transfer Test Score (STTS) of 121 or above to be considered for a grammar school place. Beyond that each school sets its own criteria so please refer to each school's admissions policy for details. The schools do not use the scores to rank children so children with a higher score are not at an advantage for grammar school entry. The test scores are weighted thus: Verbal 50%, Maths 25%, Non-verbal 25%.
